The definition of diva.
The reason I decided to make a blog about being a diva was because of Beyonce's song "Diva." In her song she says, "A diva is a female version of a hustler." Now I love Beyonce, but I disagree with that statement. To me it makes absolutely no sense, however, I love the fact that Beyonce makes her own definition of 'diva.'
According to Dictionary.com, a diva is a distinguished female singer; prima donna. That is totally inconsistent with the whole point of this blog right? To me a diva is a person (most likely a female) who defines their own journey and destiny, and is not ashamed to be themselves at all times.
You don't have to follow some long list of rules, dress one certain way, or where you hair one way. That's not what being a diva is all about. Being a diva is about defining what you want to be and how you want to be perceived and then working to make yourself that way.
If you want to be 'that bitch' that when you walk in the room all the women are jealous and all the men are speechless- then hey, find out what you need to do to be that person. Personally, I want to be strong, successful, pretty, fashionable, articulate, and fun to be around. I put things on this blog that are some-what catered to my journey to diva, but are also general enough that other people can enjoy.
Another main point that I hope comes across here is that YOU define what you want to be. Don't be guided by famous people, or others. Really sit down and think about what you want to be/how you want to be, and then come up with a strategy to do that. Even if you just come up with a starting point, start! I would recommend getting rid of that bad habit that you have. You'll feel accomplished and it will compel you to do more to better yourself and your situation.
So lets sum it up: Being a diva is about defining yourself, and appreciating your journey to becoming the person you want to be. Appearance can easily be altered, but we all know that 'diva' comes from within and any real modification you want to make will also have to come from within.
Always stay true to you and love the diva within. Until next time, **Muah**

When Bey says a Diva is a female version of a hustla all she means is that a Diva is a female that is about getting money and getting paid. And Bey is certainly doin' that, so I love that line.
ReplyDeleteI was informed that diva was originated in England from the word Madam grand lady but diva meant whore. The words were put together but diva has been set apart from the actual word and meaning. Were so quick to quote things when a celebrity says it, like its automatically correct but sometimes we need to do our own research before we start quoting things. I learned about this at church Sunday in a sermon.
ReplyDeleteI think that a DIVA is a woman who is on top of her game..be it education, family, work..the best at what she does. A DIva is always looking for ways to better herself. Is about getting her money right absolutely and her credit to. Is about loving and experiencing the love of GOD at his fullest absolutely. To me a diva is a woman who is looked at by other woman and they do not envy her but want to know what is it that she is doing that grabbed their attention.
ReplyDeleteI love this explanation of Diva. I have been called diva a couple of times and actually cringed as I have always seen Diva to mean a person who is 'full of themselves' without any care or respect for others. I work so hard at trying to be considerate of others' feelings that I can not even imagine myself as a Diva. However, your explanation makes me feel better about being called a Diva as I am always looking to better myself and my loved ones. Its not all about me but about how I can better myself to in turn better the life of my children and those I love.
DeleteAlso been hurt and angry today at being called a diva.... Until I read this...Marilyn Monroe said... If you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best..... I wish all you all the best...
DeleteLove this definition.t has the 3 most important aspects in it..God,me,thoz i luv...thank u!
DeleteGreat article Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this!
ReplyDeleteI was called a diva by my mom and I am a male who like tractors and flannel shirts. What should I make of this situation I got going for me self?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe someone who was told in church that a diva is a whore is lecturing us all not to automatically quote a celebrity as if they are correct. You need to check what the church tells you just as much as any other source. You are incorrect to say that diva means 'grand lady' or 'whore'. It comes from Italian and means female god i.e. goddess. It is synonomous with 'prima donna' which is also Italian and means first (prima) lady (donna) and that would probably where they got 'grand lady' from. Prima donna is a bit like prima ballerina who will be principal dancer in a ballet company. The prima donna was the principal singer in an opera company, usually a soprano. For hundreds of years diva was used in the opera world as a description for a singer of outstanding talent. Lately, it has been used to denote the bad behaviour or to talented women in other spheres e.g. pop-diva
ReplyDeleteI have no advice for the chap who's mom called him a diva. Was it the tiara and tantrum that gave it away?
This is cool & interesting! I recently created a group name & called it GIG Divas and for some reason someone thought that the "diva" word carried a negative connotation. After following this blog...I must say I agree with SmoothDivaJ & Ms. Najah! Our GIG is all about inspiring each other to come out as successful women of integrity who defend their dreams and character with all they've got. They live life with strong convictions to become the unique person they were created to be while setting admirable examples in the community. I couldn't think of a better term - DIVA is a strong term and so are the real divas! Long live fellow divas!
ReplyDeleteI fully agree that a diva is a person who is on top of her game and know her stuff at all times. In my generation divas call themselves h.r.h- meaning her royal highness. I encourage women all over the world to be divas!!! its fun.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author of this post. Being educated starts with doing our own research and knowing the REAL meaning of things and its original use. The real meaning of Diva as mentioned earlier is: a leading woman singer, esp. in grand opera. We take words and misuse them as if we are uneducated. I guess that's why many think it's okay to call each other "B*tches", and many of us that are black like to call each other, "N*ggas". Same concept. We say these terms with no concept of the original meaning. So let's educate ourselves to educate others.

This blog is great! I never looked it up and didn't care for it really! Untill it was brought to my attn: that I, a college student, am an ignorant latina or so this person thinks. She didn't finish high school, has not been able to hold a job for more than a week and has complete disregard for others. Yet she conciders herself a diva because she lives off of her mother welfare and baby daddy. Yes she rents a nice house with her brother and his kids but never worked hard for it like her brother has. She continuosly calls me an ignorant wetback, I was born here in the U.S and have much going for me but her argument and defense is that. Not that it bothers me but it takes you back and makes you think about it. About the diva part, what should I say? Should I proceed and lecture her on it on sit back and let her make a fool of herself?
ReplyDeletehustler has a negative history. But a hustler is a "go getter" someone who does not let anything stop them. An not just money. One of the requirements of a DIVA is that you have to be a "go getter".
ReplyDeletetrue
DeleteWow, I love this discussion. The word Diva comes from latin and is related to the word Divine, so a Diva is like a goddess. It's also related to the Indian Devas or gods.
ReplyDeleteIt came into modern usage through opera - the loud, dramatic queens of the stage with exquisite voices. It was also used interchangably with the term Prima Donna (translated as First Lady).
Prima Donna also gets used as a term for a drama queen. So in response to the young man whose mum called him a Diva, maybe you were being a drama queen about something.
Anyway, back to Divas. Any woman (Divo for men)who is exuberant, out there, knows her stuff, and won't keep quiet about it, can consider herself a Diva. Divas are confident, and full of energy. They often dress distinctively, and don't care about what others think of them.
Drag queens often come across as Divas, because they celebrate the very best of feminine power and strength.
Cheers to all my fellow Divas!

I think what she is saying is 97.8% right, but i think a diva is trying to get money but also come off as a nice person but can be a bitch, .. thats me when i walk in everybodys like ooh but if you wanna get down too i can be a bitch i dress nice get my hair done and nails, so.. Byee,

And i am not a WHORE so.. everybody that says that can stfu.
I was just looking for the definition of a DIVA so that I could share
ReplyDeleteit with people through the FB group I'm about to create.
Thanks so very much for this great post and all the comments.
Really appreciate those of you who have taken the time to
share your definition of what you think a DIVA is.
I'm borrowing 2 of the definitions above and combine them into one for
my definition. Thanks so much again.
Therefore, to me, a DIVA is a woman who is:
- Exuberant, out there, knows her stuff & won't keep quiet about it.
- At the top of her game
- Confident, and full of energy
- Often dresses distinctively (a DIVA wants to be noticed, wants to stand out).
- Looked at by another woman, who do not envy her but want to know:
- Who she is
- What she does
- How they too can become more like her
- Cares about others
The above is now my definition of a DIVA. If you'd like to be a part of the DIVA Facebook Group I'm about to create please contact me at:
http://facebook.com/marionmehrer
When asked, "what are you doing?", I replied, "I am being a domestic diva". Thanks to this blog, it appears I can be a few things....and they are all good.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should read the actual definition of the word " Diva" !
ReplyDeleteIt is an opera singer or Pre madona it has absolutely nothing to do with " how you want you journey to be or how you want to be perceived. People like Jlo And lady gaga arn't divas just dumbasses who can't read the dictionary. All being a diva nowadays according to your meaning is to be an IDIOT. Doy you realize that if you call yourself a diva in front of people I hope you realize that those same people are laughing their ass's off behind your back. Aa I am right now. Add this to your Blog. Is end this as an anonymous comment because I don't want all the whining from all the "diva" wantab's sending me what I call unintelligent uninformed whine mail!!!
Im a Male and to me, most of the women today has plain lost site of their direction. This is sad people. Women are not door mats for men, and brothers has lost site as well these Europeans has jacked up our people. I will post some books for all of you to read and if you like reference the author so you will know I'm not throwing some bull at you.

ReplyDeleteWho wrote this blog? I'd like to email them. Thanks
DeleteAll i have to denote to those who call thierselves diva is that; they should re-think through thier life and make necessary amendment before they found theirselves at the wrong places for the term diva should not be answered by anything created by the ALMIGHTY GOD.
ReplyDeleteI think the term diva should revert back to it's original meaning. According to dictionary.com;
ReplyDeleteWorld English Dictionary
diva (ˈdiːvə)
— n , pl -vas , -ve
a highly distinguished female singer; prima donna
[C19: via Italian from Latin: a goddess, from dīvus divine ]

ReplyDeleteim a diva cuz im just me and i love it
ReplyDeletei believe im a diva cause i always be me and always on my grind. and i love being me
ReplyDeleteA DIVA is a female most likely-although we could challenge that...who thinks the word owes her recognition beyond reason and can not or will not learn to fry a egg or make a cup of Joe. Try working for one...it is like living in hell. I think someone talented knows it and does not have to put others down or bully people to get their way. I say Bye Bye to DIVAs.
ReplyDeleteJust yesterday this woman called me a Diva; she does it every chance shee gets. I am confident, poise, personable, knowledgeable, edcated and kind. I believe in being a person of high Intergity. I am not a follower. I don't the nonsense that some of the crazy clanish women have. I am sick and tired of this woman calling me that i the present of her clanish fake friends.
ReplyDeleteAt first, I too thought Beyonce's defintion of diva was a complete opposite of what a diva really means. A diva is a highly talented and demanding woman, and a hustler is a go-getter. However, after thinking about it, there is a context in which both meanings will make sense. A high-class prostitute who manages herself without a pimp can both be highly talented and a go-getter at the same time. So, in this very limited circumstance, Beyonce may be correct. Maybe, a diva CAN be a female version of a hustler.
ReplyDeleteI love my ladies but you'll need to stop trying to define things and trying to come up with a word that defines a hard working woman, like some one said a diva is bitch with no shame nor no pride, if you're trying to define a hard working female she's call a woman or a lady, stop chasing behind these no sense people in the entertainment industry cause every thing they do and say it's to make money nothing else nothing more, it's so sad to see the old ways of human beings gone what will become of us in the next 100th year the kids today have no respect or regard for any one and having kids by different partners and claim it's being a diva.
